March 12, 2026 ~ On Saturday, March 22, we will recognize National Health Care Rights Day, an annual day dedicated to raising awareness about the laws and protections that help people access medical care and navigate a complex health system. Now in its second year, the day highlights an often-overlooked reality: many people don’t know the health care rights they already have, and that lack of information can lead to delayed care, denied coverage, unnecessary costs, and avoidable stress.
What Are Health Care Rights?
Health care rights include the laws and policies that protect access to necessary medical care, health insurance coverage, workplace accommodations, essential health benefits, and consumer protections. Triage Cancer nominated National Health Care Rights Day to the National Day Calendar to elevate the importance of understanding and using these rights, particularly for individuals facing chronic or serious medical conditions.
Why Health Care Rights Matter
A serious or chronic diagnosis can be overwhelming, physically, emotionally, and financially. In these moments, people are often expected to make high-stakes decisions while navigating complicated insurance rules, appeals processes, and workplace policies.
Health care rights play a critical role in protecting access to care and financial stability by helping prevent unnecessary delays, unexpected medical bills, and barriers created by insurance denials or administrative hurdles. Without clear, accessible information, many individuals struggle to advocate for themselves or even realize that options and protections exist.
How You Can Support National Health Care Rights Day
National Health Care Rights Day is about awareness, action, and access. You can support the day by:
- Signing up for the Triage Health Conference in May to learn more about your health carerights
- Learning about your rights related to health insurance, disability benefits, employment, and more
- Contacting your elected officials to support policies and laws that protect access to health care
- Sharing your story on social media using #NationalHealthCareRightsDay and tagging @TriageHealth
To make participation easy, we created a Social Media Toolkit with ready-to-use posts and graphics that anyone can download and share throughout March.
Moving Forward Together
Health care rights are only effective if people know they exist and understand how to use them. National Health Care Rights Day is an opportunity to elevate these conversations, share resources, and empower individuals to navigate health care systems with greater confidence.
Together, we can help ensure that everyone has the knowledge and support they need to access quality health care and reduce the financial hardship that can come with serious illness.
